SO SHE USE TO TELL ME ALL THESE MAGICAL THINGS ABOUT 63 AND HARLEM BUT SHE ALSO USED TO TALK ABOUT HER GRANDFATHER, WHO’S NAME WAS ELDRIDGE RAYMOND JOHNSON, WHO CAME UP HERE FROM CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA AND MIGRATED TO HARLEM BUT HE WAS A GEECHY. HE WAS ABLE TO SIT DOWN WITH THE MOB, I’M TALKING ABOUT THE ITALIANS FROM PLEASANT AVE, LIKE LUCKY LUCIANO, MIA LANSKY, BUGSY SIEGEL, FRANK COSTELLO, THESE GUYS THAT YOU SEE IN YOUR MOVIES LIKE “MOBSTERS” AND “THE GODFATHER”, HE REALLY RAN WITH THEM, HE WAS THE LIANSAN FOR THE ITALIANS AND THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HARLEM. IT’S LIKE A MOVIE I SAW CALLED “PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS” AND YOUR DREAMS ARE ALL YOU GOT. YOU GOT TO PROTECT THEM WITH EVERYTHING THAT YOU HAVE AND I MADE A PROMISE TO THIS LADY THAT I WOULD GO OUT THERE BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY AND CREATE AN AVENUE FOR HER LEGEND OR HER STORY TO BE TOLD OF WHO HER FATHER WAS. BUT GOING ABOUT DOING IT, YOU KNOW, I HAD A LOT OF STRUGGLE, IT WAS TIMES WHERE I DIDN’T KNOW WHERE I WAS GOING, WHAT I WAS DOING… IT WAS JUST CRAZY. YOU HAVE TO GO OUT THERE, YOU HAVE TO NETWORK, YOU HAVE TO MEET PEOPLE BUT EVERY PLACE, YOU DON’T HAVE BE EVERY PLACE. LIKE EVERY PARTY OR EVERY SPOT, THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO BE THERE. MARKUANN SMITH: YEAH, IN LIFE THERE’S A LOT OF DISAPPOINTMENTS. THIS IS NOT A BET BASH AND I BELIEVE I’VE LEARNED A LOT FROM WORKING AT BET BUT IT ALSO HINDERED ME. SOME WORKPLACES THEY LET YOU KNOW THERE’S A GLASS CEILING AND THAT’S AS FAR AS YOU CAN GO. AND THAT'S HOW I FELT THERE, I FELT THAT I WAS BEING SUPPRESSED, I FELT LIKE I WAS BEING STAGNATED AND WHEN YOU GET COMFORTABLE THAT’S A DANGEROUS EMOTION TO BE COMFORTABLE. YOU KNOW YOU CAN GO TO WORK EVERYDAY AND 12 O’CLOCK YOU GO TO LUNCH, QUARTER TO 1 YOU GET A SMOKE BREAK, YOUR BOSS IS SAYING WHY YOU NOT BACK AT 1 O’CLOCK. I DIDN’T WANT TO LIVE MY LIFE LIKE THAT, I DIDN’T WANT TO WAKE UP SUNDAY MORNING REGRETTING GOING TO WORK ON MONDAY. EVEN THOUGH I WORKED AT WHAT PEOPLE SAID WAS A REAL PRESTIGIOUS PLACE BUT I WASN’T AT A PLACE WHERE I WAS FEELING CREATIVE. I FELT LIKE I WAS JUST DOING, I WAS SURVIVING, I WASN’T LIVING.

MY BROTHER HAD THE DALLEYS, DAPPER DAN AND EVERYTHING BUT HE CHOSE TO WORK AT KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN TO STAY OFF THE STREETS. SO PEOPLE USE TO TEASE HIM ALL THE TIME BECAUSE THEY USE TO SEE HIM WITH THE FLOUR ON HIM, YOU KNOW KNOW, COMING OFF FROM WORK THEY’D CALL HIM THE CHICKEN MAN. WHEN HE GOT THE DEAL WITH ANDRE HARRELL OVER AT UPTOWN MCA RECORDS HE DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME TO BE ON THE ROAD WITH HIM BECAUSE I WAS IN AND OUT OF JUVENILE FACILITIES, OUT OF SPARFORD, LINCOLN HALL, THINKS LIKE THAT. ME BEING ABLE TO TRAVEL, HIM GIVING ME AN OPPORTUNITY TRAVEL THE WORLD SHOWED ME THAT THERE WAS MORE THAN THIS SQUARE BOX THAT I LIVED IN. BUT CHRIS WASN’T REALLY BEING NEGATIVE, HE WAS JUST TEACHING ME HOW TO MANAGE EXPECTATIONS. IN THIS BUSINESS YOU HAVE TO MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS BECAUSE YOU CAN’T BE HAPPY UNTIL THE CHECK IS CLEARED AND YOU STILL HAVE TO MAKE SURE AND WORK EVERYDAY. SO HE WAS JUST TRYING REALLY TO PROTECT ME BUT I AM A PERSON THAT WHERE I COME FROM I DIDN’T HAVE A PLAN B SO LIGHTING DOESN’T SCARE ME.

AND WHEN YOU’RE TELLING STORIES THERE'S AN ALPO IN EVERY HOOD, THERE'S A RICH PORTER IN EVERY HOOD, THERE'S A MARTIN LUTHER KING BOULEVARD IN EVERY HOOD AND A MALCOM X BOULEVARD IN EVERY HOOD… WHATS THE STORY THAT YOU’RE TRYING TO SELL THAT CUTS THROUGH THE FOG, THAT SEPARATES YOUR STORY FROM EVERYBODY ELSE'S?
