The Underdog | Mike Kuwan

INTERVIEW TERRELL “REALIFE” BLACK PHOTOGRAPHY

Since his last Validated Magazine interview in 2020, Mike Kuwan has sharpened his business mindset, refined his creative approach, and embraced the discipline required to survive in a constantly changing hip-hop landscape. With new music, a renewed sense of purpose, and his latest single, “THE BREAKDOWN,” on the horizon, the independent artist is focused on turning persistence into progress while remaining true to the experiences that shaped him.

In hip-hop, longevity requires more than talent. It demands consistency, adaptability, self-awareness, and the willingness to keep moving when the attention fades and the industry shifts its focus elsewhere. For independent artists, the challenge is even greater. Without the machinery of a major label behind them, they must balance the art of making music with the business of building a brand, connecting with listeners, and creating opportunities that can sustain a career. For Mike Kuwan, those lessons have become an important part of his evolution.

When Kuwan last spoke with Validated Magazine in January 2020, he was navigating his journey as an artist and continuing to develop his place within hip-hop. Returning for this follow-up conversation, the difference isn’t simply the passage of time or the release of additional music. It’s the perspective he’s gained along the way. The artist who once approached certain situations with a more personal investment now understands the importance of separating his emotions from the realities of the business.

Looking back at his growth since that first interview in 2020, Kuwan describes the evolution as a positive one, both personally and creatively. Earlier in his journey, industry relationships and situations surrounding his music could affect him on a deeper level. Today, he has learned to take a step back, maintain his focus, and recognize that his passion for the craft doesn’t necessarily mean others will share the same investment.

“Before I took a lot of things personal when it came to my music and industry relationships,” he explains. “But now I’m detached from those feelings completely, knowing that no one cares how passionate you are about your craft. The show must go on, and you can be hot today and cold tomorrow, so you have to keep yourself hungry and prepared.”

It’s a candid assessment of the realities artists face when pursuing longevity. Passion may be the foundation, but passion alone won’t guarantee opportunities, attention, or continued success. The industry moves quickly, relationships change, and yesterday’s momentum doesn’t automatically translate into tomorrow’s results. Kuwan has learned that the ability to keep creating, improving, and preparing for the next opportunity is just as important as the talent that gets an artist noticed in the first place.

That shift in perspective has also influenced the way he approaches his music. Rather than simply recording songs and putting them into the world, he’s become more conscious of creating records that offer something beyond an immediate listen. He’s taking more time to develop complete musical experiences, placing greater emphasis on substance, structure, and the overall body of work.

FROM MAKING MUSIC TO MOVING WITH A STRATEGY

One of the biggest changes in Kuwan’s development has been his understanding of the business side of being an artist. The distinction between the way he operated earlier in his career and how he moves today comes down to intention. There was a time when making music was the primary objective. Now, he wants each move to serve a purpose within a larger plan.

“My strategy and business mindset,” he says, identifying the biggest difference between his former approach and the way he operates today. “Before I was making music just to make music. Now I have a strategy behind everything I approach.”

That statement reflects an important lesson for independent artists trying to establish themselves in an increasingly competitive environment. Creating quality music is essential, but it represents only one part of the equation. Artists must also think about release schedules, branding, content, audience engagement, presentation, and how each individual record contributes to their overall identity.

Kuwan’s evolving mindset suggests that he is no longer looking at each release as an isolated accomplishment. Instead, he’s approaching his career as something that requires planning and continued investment. The music must connect, the presentation must capture attention, and the work surrounding each release must help move the bigger picture forward.

For independent artists, that balance can be difficult to maintain. The creative process requires freedom, while the business demands organization and a clear understanding of the audience. Learning to operate in both spaces can be the difference between consistently releasing music and building a career with direction.

Kuwan’s willingness to recognize what needed to change speaks to his maturity. Rather than allowing the industry’s challenges to discourage him, he’s using his experience to make more informed decisions. The goal is no longer simply to stay active; it’s to make that activity count.

STAYING RELEVANT WITHOUT LOSING YOUR IDENTITY

Hip-hop has changed considerably since Kuwan’s previous Validated Magazine interview. Streaming, short-form video, social media, and the constant flow of new releases have transformed how music reaches listeners. An artist can release a record today and find the conversation moving somewhere else tomorrow. Maintaining visibility has become an ongoing responsibility rather than something that can be handled with a single promotional push.

For Kuwan, however, adapting to the current environment doesn’t mean abandoning the creative process that has always worked for him. He remains committed to his own way of making music, even as he acknowledges that the surrounding landscape requires a more consistent presence.

“The process is always gonna be my process,” he says. “I just know things now as far as music have a very, very short attention span, so you have to be in these people faces consistently.”

That understanding has become central to his approach. In a crowded marketplace, releasing a good song is only the beginning. Artists must find ways to keep their names circulating, give listeners something to engage with between releases, and create opportunities for people to discover their music.

For Kuwan, this means recognizing the relationship between the record and everything surrounding it. Content can introduce a song to a new audience, reinforce an artist’s identity, and keep an existing audience engaged. Consistency allows those individual moments to work together rather than disappear as soon as the next release arrives.

Still, his comments make an important distinction: adapting to the business doesn’t require changing who you are creatively. Kuwan isn’t suggesting that artists should abandon their sound to chase whatever happens to be popular. Instead, he understands that maintaining an authentic creative process must be accompanied by a strategy for reaching people.

It’s a balancing act between staying true to the music and remaining visible enough for the music to find its audience. In today’s hip-hop climate, both sides of that equation matter.

THE GHETTO POET: GIVING THE UNDERDOG A VOICE

For listeners unfamiliar with Mike Kuwan, his music offers an introduction to a storyteller who isn’t afraid to reveal the complicated parts of his journey. His identity as an artist is rooted in personal experiences, honest observations, and the ability to translate life’s highs and lows into records that others can recognize themselves in.

When asked to describe his sound today, Kuwan identifies himself as “the ghetto poet” and a storyteller. His music isn’t limited to presenting a polished version of his life. He wants listeners to experience the good, the bad, and everything in between.

“I give you a front-row seat of my life theater, whether good, bad, or ugly,” he explains.

That description captures the personal nature of his approach. Rather than separating the music from the person creating it, Kuwan uses his experiences as a foundation for his storytelling. His records provide a window into his perspective, allowing listeners to hear the lessons, emotions, and circumstances that have contributed to the man he is today.

The appeal of that honesty extends beyond any one audience. People from different backgrounds can connect with the feeling of being underestimated, working toward something bigger, or trying to overcome circumstances that threaten to limit their potential. Kuwan understands that connection because he sees himself as part of that same struggle.

“I connect with all people who can relate to being the underdog,” he says. “I am the underdog, and I speak for underdogs who probably will never get heard or recognized in life.”

It’s a statement that defines more than his sound; it establishes the purpose behind his voice. Kuwan isn’t simply documenting his own experiences. He’s also representing people who may feel overlooked, unheard, or forgotten in a world that often celebrates the finished product without acknowledging the struggle required to get there.

The underdog perspective is especially meaningful in an industry where success can appear effortless from the outside. Listeners see the finished records, the promotional campaigns, and the moments when an artist receives recognition. They don’t always see the years of uncertainty, the setbacks, the sacrifices, or the determination required to keep pursuing a dream.

Kuwan’s storytelling gives those experiences room to exist. His music acknowledges that life doesn’t always follow a straight path and that personal progress can take place long before the rest of the world notices. By putting those experiences into his records, he offers listeners an opportunity to recognize their own stories in his.

MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE BEYOND THE MOMENT

For Kuwan, the ultimate goal isn’t simply to have someone hear a song. He wants the music to leave listeners with something they can carry into their own lives.

Asked what he hopes people take away from his records, he puts inspiration first. But the message also extends to perspective, particularly the importance of understanding that a difficult present doesn’t have to determine the future.

“To be inspired first and secondly knowing that today is today and tomorrow shouldn’t be judged based upon today’s situation,” he explains.

It’s a philosophy that aligns naturally with his identity as an underdog. When a person is struggling, it can be easy to mistake a temporary setback for a permanent outcome. Disappointment can make progress seem impossible, while repeated obstacles can cause people to question whether their efforts are worth continuing.

Kuwan wants his music to challenge that mindset. His message encourages listeners to remain open to the possibility of change, even when their current circumstances don’t reflect the future they envision.

That doesn’t mean ignoring hardship or pretending that every obstacle can be overcome overnight. Instead, it’s about refusing to allow one difficult chapter to define the entire story. The same principle has influenced Kuwan’s own journey: learning from what didn’t work, adjusting his approach, and continuing to pursue his goals despite the uncertainty that comes with being an independent artist.

His music serves as a reminder that progress isn’t always immediate and recognition doesn’t always arrive when expected. Sometimes, the most important part of the journey is the decision to continue when the results haven’t caught up with the effort.

For an artist who identifies so closely with the underdog, that message feels personal. Kuwan isn’t speaking from the perspective of someone who has never faced adversity. He’s speaking as someone who understands the importance of believing there is more ahead.

“DEAD END,” “GHOST,” AND THE POWER OF REINVENTION

Kuwan’s recent singles, “Dead End” and “Ghost,” have helped him continue making his presence felt while demonstrating his commitment to remaining active. With new music arriving constantly, he understands that artists must give listeners compelling reasons to keep paying attention.

For him, one part of that equation is reinvention. Staying relevant doesn’t mean repeating the same formula indefinitely. It means understanding how to present yourself in ways that continue to engage an audience while preserving the identity that makes your music your own.

“Me reinventing myself, knowing how to grab the listeners’ ears with great pieces of content,” he says, explaining what has helped him maintain interest in his work.

The response to the singles has been encouraging, and Kuwan speaks confidently about the reception they’ve received. Rather than describing the reaction as a surprise, he says he anticipated that listeners would respond positively.

“The responses I’ve been getting from those records have been super dope, but it’s honestly something I knew was gonna happen. I felt it.”

That confidence reflects the relationship between an artist’s creative instincts and the work required to bring a record to an audience. While no release comes with a guarantee, artists often develop a sense of when a song captures the sound, feeling, or message they’ve been trying to communicate.

For Kuwan, that belief has to be supported by action. The music must be accompanied by content that encourages discovery, gives listeners a reason to engage, and keeps the conversation moving after the initial release.

It’s another example of how his creative and business mindsets have begun working together. The song remains the centerpiece, but the strategy surrounding it helps determine how many people have the opportunity to hear it.

As he continues releasing music, Kuwan is focused on maintaining that momentum rather than relying on one record to carry the entire weight of his career. Each release becomes another opportunity to introduce himself to new listeners, strengthen his connection with existing supporters, and demonstrate the evolution taking place behind the scenes.

BUILDING A CONNECTION BEYOND THE MUSIC

For independent artists, the relationship with the audience can be just as important as the music itself. Without the resources that major-label artists may have at their disposal, independent musicians often have to build their communities directly, creating relationships through social media, content, live interactions, and consistent communication.

Kuwan considers that connection essential to the process.

“That’s the number one thing besides being consistent,” he says, emphasizing the importance of building relationships beyond the records.

He also offers a realistic view of the modern music consumer. In his experience, listeners have countless options, and their attention cannot be taken for granted. “Fans are not loyal. They are consumers who need to be catered to constantly, or they’ll quickly find someone else to be loyal to at the moment,” he explains.

It’s a blunt assessment, but it reflects the competitive reality of the digital music environment. Listeners can discover a new artist with a single scroll, explore an entire catalog within minutes, and move between genres and releases without much friction. Maintaining their interest requires more than asking them to stream a song.

For Kuwan, the answer is continued engagement. Artists must create opportunities for people to connect with their personalities, understand their journeys, and feel involved in the process. Content gives listeners another way to interact with the artist, while consistent releases provide new reasons to return to the music.

This approach also reinforces the importance of building a recognizable identity. When listeners understand what an artist represents, what inspires the music, and what makes the journey worth following, they have more reasons to remain engaged beyond a single release.

Kuwan’s emphasis on audience connection demonstrates that he understands the independent artist’s role extends beyond the recording booth. He must be the creator, the strategist, and an active participant in the community surrounding his music.

THE STORY BEHIND “THE BREAKDOWN”

The next chapter of Kuwan’s journey arrives with “THE BREAKDOWN,” a single built around hustle, motivation, energy, and inspiration. The record represents another opportunity to connect with listeners through music that reflects movement, determination, and the experiences that continue to shape his perspective.

Interestingly, the inspiration came during an ordinary drive to Washington, D.C., to visit his brother. While on the road, Kuwan found himself transported back to an earlier period of his life, when traveling with product in the trunk carried the possibility of serious consequences.

“I made the record driving to D.C. to visit my brother,” he recalls. “I was on the road, and it gave me that feel when I used to hit the road with stuff in the trunk I could’ve served a lot of time for. Immediately, I got inspired.”

The moment highlights the way personal memories can become the starting point for creative expression. A familiar feeling, a particular setting, or a recollection from an earlier chapter can suddenly provide the spark needed to develop an entirely new record.

In this case, the drive stirred up memories associated with risk, hustle, and the realities of a different time in Kuwan’s life. Rather than letting the moment pass, he recognized the creative energy behind it and translated that feeling into music.

The result is a record he describes through four central qualities: “Hustle, motivation, energetic, inspiration.”

Those elements connect with the broader themes that run throughout his story. Kuwan’s journey has been shaped by the desire to keep moving, the determination to improve his circumstances, and the belief that past experiences can provide material for future growth. “THE BREAKDOWN” draws from that spirit, using the energy of the moment to fuel a new musical statement.

The record also offers a glimpse into his creative process. When asked what comes first while making music, Kuwan explains that the beat establishes the foundation.

“The beat is what starts the engine, then the feeling, then the words pour.”

It’s a straightforward description of a process that begins with sound and develops through emotion before the lyrics take shape. The production creates the atmosphere, the feeling gives the record its direction, and the words emerge as he works through what the music brings to the surface.

That process allows his experiences to remain central to the work without requiring every song to begin with a fully developed concept. Sometimes the sound itself provides the first spark, giving him the space to discover the story as the record unfolds.

With “THE BREAKDOWN,” the inspiration came from a specific memory and the energy attached to it. The challenge then became turning that feeling into something listeners could experience for themselves.

RESPECTING THE FOUNDATIONS WHILE KEEPING AN EAR ON THE FUTURE

Although Kuwan continues to refine his approach, his musical influences remain connected to hip-hop artists whose work has made a lasting impression on him. When discussing the names still inspiring his listening habits, he points to 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Jadakiss, Fabolous, and Nipsey Hussle, along with a few newer artists.

That combination reflects an appreciation for established voices and the continuing evolution of the culture. Each artist has contributed a distinct presence to hip-hop, whether through storytelling, personality, lyrical delivery, business ambition, or the ability to connect with an audience.

For an artist who identifies as a storyteller, listening remains part of the creative process. Studying different approaches to music can provide inspiration without requiring an artist to abandon his own identity. The challenge is taking those influences and experiences and transforming them into something personal.

Kuwan’s development has been driven by that balance. He’s learned to become more deliberate about his business decisions while continuing to draw from the music and experiences that have shaped him. Rather than treating growth as a departure from his foundation, he appears to view it as an opportunity to build upon it.

That same principle applies to the way he sees the future. He isn’t looking to erase his past or pretend that earlier chapters of his life didn’t happen. Those experiences remain part of his story, informing the music he creates and the perspective he brings to his career.

His recommendation for first-time listeners is “Still Me,” a record he believes offers an effective introduction to his identity.

“It gives you an introduction to who I am and who I also used to be in certain areas of the record,” he explains.

The title itself suggests continuity through change. Kuwan may have developed a different mindset, refined his approach, and learned valuable lessons about the industry, but the experiences that shaped him remain part of who he is. “Still Me” provides listeners with an opportunity to hear that relationship between past and present.

THE NEXT GOAL: A PLACE ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS

As Kuwan looks toward the next phase of his career, he has a clear milestone in mind: seeing his name on the Billboard charts.

“Billboard. It don’t matter what number I am. I just wanna see my name there,” he says.

The statement captures the ambition of an artist who continues to measure his progress against goals that remain ahead of him. For Kuwan, the chart isn’t necessarily about securing a particular position. It’s about reaching a milestone that would represent another significant step in his journey.

His ambition also reflects the importance of visibility within the music industry. For independent artists, building recognition can open doors to new listeners, greater opportunities, and additional avenues for growth. Reaching a major chart would be a meaningful accomplishment, but the work required to pursue that goal involves the same principles Kuwan has been emphasizing throughout his evolution: preparation, consistency, strategy, and belief in his own abilities.

In the meantime, he’s keeping the momentum moving through additional singles and pieces of content. Rather than rushing directly into a larger release, Kuwan plans to continue building interest before putting out his next project in late winter.

That approach gives him room to introduce new music, maintain an active connection with his audience, and continue developing the direction of his next body of work. Each release can serve as another piece of the larger story, allowing listeners to follow the journey while giving new audiences multiple entry points into his catalog.

It’s a deliberate approach that reflects the business mindset he says was missing earlier in his career. The focus is on building toward something rather than simply putting music out and hoping it finds an audience.

A JOURNEY DEFINED BY SELF-BELIEF

Looking back at his evolution, Mike Kuwan’s story is about more than adapting to changes in hip-hop. It’s about learning to approach his ambitions with a different level of maturity while preserving the determination that brought him this far.

He’s become more aware of the industry’s realities, more strategic in his decision-making, and more intentional about the relationship between his music and his brand. He understands that attention can be temporary, audiences have options, and even a strong record needs consistent effort behind it.

Yet his outlook remains grounded in the same belief that has carried him through the difficult moments. He continues to identify with the underdog, not as a label that limits him, but as a perspective that informs his music and fuels his desire to keep progressing.

That connection between the artist and the message is what gives his journey its meaning. Kuwan’s records reflect a willingness to acknowledge where he has been while remaining open to where he can go. His experiences provide the material, his storytelling gives those experiences a voice, and his ambition keeps him looking toward the next milestone.

When asked what he wants his music and journey to communicate about the man behind the microphone, his response brings the conversation full circle.

“I never gave up and believed in me when nobody did.”

The statement serves as both a personal reflection and the defining message of his career. Long before the recognition he hopes to achieve, Kuwan has had to maintain his own belief in the possibilities ahead. That belief has helped him continue making music, learn from experience, and approach his career with a renewed sense of purpose.

As he prepares to move forward with “THE BREAKDOWN,” more singles, and a larger project on the horizon, he’s focused on turning that determination into tangible results. The Billboard charts remain a goal, new listeners remain an opportunity, and the underdog story continues to unfold.

For Mike Kuwan, the next chapter isn’t about pretending the journey has been easy. It’s about proving that the setbacks, lessons, and years of persistence can contribute to something greater.

The music continues. The strategy is sharper. The hunger remains.

And regardless of how quickly the industry moves, Mike Kuwan is determined to keep betting on himself.
